Airline Cargo Management speaks to Jason Breakwell about the cool chain sector.

Frankfurt 27.02.2025

“In September, the Cool Chain Association (CCA) is meeting in the French capital, Paris, to discuss and share thoughts on collaborative solutions for innovation and data sharing at its 7th Pharma and Biosciences Conference. Indeed, innovators with new solutions are exploring how they can work together to provide the infrastructure needed to ensure a successful end-to-end cool chain delivery.”

“As much as air cargo must adhere to the needs of the growing pharma and cold chain sectors, so must the ground-based feeder trucking networks.”

“Like others in the community, Breakwell acknowledges that regulatory requirements have become stricter in many countries, most notably in the European Union with the EU Good Distribution Practice.”

Temperature controlled transportations on the rise in Scandinavia

Temperature controlled transportations on the rise in Scandinavia

06.08.2019

Wallenborn Scandinavia expands its fleet with 10 new temperature controlled trailers.

Luxembourg, 06.08.2019

Scandinavia has long been an important market for Wallenborn. Copenhagen Airport’s attractive geography and location have helped make it a northern European hub for air cargo traffic to Scandinavia, the Baltic States and the countries to the south of the Baltic Sea. Wallenborn, which has had a presence in the region since its acquisition of Haugsted AirCargo Services in 2009, has been able to leverage this to service a number of different industries. This includes transports for the Health Care, Automotive, Farming and Engineering & Manufacturing sectors.

In the past three years alone, Wallenborn expanded its footprint in Scandinavia by more than 20%. New trucking lanes have been added continuously, including connections from Finland and Sweden to St. Petersburg, additional frequencies to the Baltic states and extra capacity connecting the Nordic region with major air hubs such as AMS, FRA, LGG and LUX. Wallenborn currently offers more than 90 daily lanes distributing import transit cargo from the incoming widebody- and freighter flights flying into CPH, OSL, GOT, OSL and HEL amongst others.

More recently, the need for temperature controlled transport has been on the rise. Peter Nygaard, branch Manager of Wallenborn Scandinavia said: “We have seen a steady rise in airfreight volumes over the past 5 years, but the demand for temperature controlled transportation has increased significantly over the past year. To respond to this growing demand we have invested in additional temperature controlled trailers which are kitted out with the latest technology.”

Ties that bind: Frantz Wallenborn

Ties that bind:
Frantz Wallenborn

As the third-generation owner of Wallenborn Group, Frantz Wallenborn is holding fast to the legacy built by his grandfather. But he does not expect his children to do the same.

Luxembourg, 01.08.2019

Like many who join a family business, Frantz’s career grew more out of chance than passion. “My father was running a small trucking company and I was tailing him. At some point, it felt like the right thing to do to join the business,” he explains. Although he was the boss’s son, Frantz paid his dues. “I started out as a dispatcher before moving on to bookkeeping and managing invoices. The company was still a small enterprise then, so there was little outsourcing and everything was done in-house,” he recalls. Frantz dabbled in various departments and was able to gain a complete understanding of the firm’s full operations. His first role, however, remains his favourite. “Dispatching was really my baby,” he professes. “Europe then was so unlike the Europe of today – there were borders. It was very exciting, being just 25 years old or so, to get to travel to all these different countries, interacting with and proposing new ideas to customers.”

Frantz took on the role of CEO in 1998 after his parents moved to the south of Spain for their retirement. Even though he hadn’t started out with a particular passion for the industry, Frantz nevertheless found himself keen to succeed. “I think it has something to do with my personality,” he guesses.

Wallenborn Belgium becomes a Regulated Agent

Wallenborn Belgium becomes a Regulated Agent

30.07.2019

Our Belgian branch, Wallenborn Belgium SPRL, passed the audit to become a Regulated Agent.

Luxembourg, 30.07.2019

Around 80% of air cargo is carried on passenger aircraft, so it is important that all air cargo is robustly screened to ensure that prohibited articles are not part of flown cargo. To be able to handle secure cargo, companies need to become a Regulated Agent, as approved and required by the aviation authority.

Pre-requisites of becoming a Regulated Agent include:

  • you handle cargo which will be carried on civil aircraft
  • you or another person acting on your behalf deliver cargo direct to an aircraft operator

In addition, companies must be able to demonstrate that:

  • all staff (permanent, temporary/agency staff and drivers) with access to air cargo/mail have received the appropriate aviation security training
  • access to the production area is controlled and the production process is supervised

Once a company has successfully completed the audit and approved as a Regulated Agent, listing can be for up to a maximum of five years before. Therafter companies need to be re-audited.

With its new status, Wallenborn Belgium now joins Wallenborn Netherlands BV, Wallenborn UK Limited, Wallenborn Scandinavia A/S, and of course Wallenborn Transports S.A. in Luxembourg as a Regulated Agent. A big congratulations to Donald Schaap, Branch Manager Belgium, and his team for the successful audit completion.

Heathrow truckers benefit from reduced waiting times

Heathrow truckers benefit from reduced waiting times

23.07.2019

Wallenborn’s Commercial Director, Jason Breakwell speaks to Air Cargo News about the benefits of Advance Information System (AIS) at Heathrow.

Luxembourg, 23.07.2019

“Trucking firms have noticed a reduction in dwell times at Heathrow airport’s congested cargo sheds following the launch of a community data system. Air cargo data community CCS-UK launched its Advance Information System (AIS) more than 18 months ago and various logistics players are now using the system, which provides shipment updates and data through a centralised platform.”

“Road feeder service provider Wallenborn manager, development and key accounts, Jason Breakwell said that the company began using the AIS portal just over a year ago and had since used it to replace all of its manual systems. That means all our teams over Europe; London, Amsterdam, Brussels, Liege, are using AIS and no longer reporting by email.”

“It was a smooth transition. Our team likes AIS – they thought it was easy to use and it was simple to upload data.”

Breakwell said that the company will also soon use APIs to link into the system, which should smooth the entry of data.”

Another custom built trailer for our Outsize & Aerospace division

Another custom built trailer for our Outsize & Aerospace division

25.06.2019

Wallenborn takes delivery of a customised trailer with powered rollerbed equipped with a Hydraroll system and hydraulic lifting mechanism.

Luxembourg, 25.06.2019

In September last year Wallenborn’s Outsize & Aerospace department took delivery of its first custom made trailer – a trailer considered a mega flatbed engine carrier equipped with a Hydraroll powered rollerbed and winch, enabling us to transport any kind of aircraft engine requiring loading/offloading with a powered rollerbed (Trent Engine Series). Only a handful of European transport providers can offer this service.

This month we add a second custom built trailer to the Outsize fleet. The new trailer is essentially a replica of the first, yet differentiates itself with a hydraulic lifting mechanism. This new mechanism allows us to lift GEnx engines (powering Boeing 747-8 and Boeing Dreamliner 787) in order to install shock mounts for safer road transportation. The engine is transferred directly from the aircraft via high-loader (Boeing 777F or 747F) or by an internal crane system (Antonov) to the trailer, where shock-mounts are attached before road transport begins.

This new capability gives us the ability to handle GEnx engines in “full roll-over-condition”, even at airports that are not equipped with heavy forklift machinery. The capacity of the hydraulic lifting system is 36 tonnes.

The trailer is also equipped with 6 powered cargo roller (PCR) units which, together with the winch provide more than enough strength and ability to safely move even the heaviest of engines. The PCR units are located in the center of the trailer floor, situated in all three sections of the floor, and 2 pneumatic palletstops are also positioned at the rear of the trailer for maximum security.

Wallenborn has fixed transport licenses for the world’s largest aircraft engines in Belgium, France, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Spain, Portugal and specific routes in Germany and Great Britain. We have developed our own “Engine Handling Procedures” for each engine type and also maintain a record of all shipments through the “Engine Check Lists”. Further services and capabilities include:

  • Dedicated engine / XXL team with 24/7 coverage
  • Customised, multi-lingual training program for AC engine transports
  • Wallenborn supervision provided at all major cargo airports
  • Dedicated  engine carrier fleet on which larger engines can also be transported as “secured cargo” in order to maintain a high security status
  • Certified strapping equipment on all engine carriers (5 ton & 10 ton straps) and chains where needed

Wallenborn grows its partnerships in the U.A.E.

Wallenborn grows its partnerships in the U.A.E.

22.05.2019

Wallenborn’s long standing customer relationships extend beyond Europe and into the Middle East.

Luxembourg, 22.05.2019

For decades Wallenborn has fostered partnerships with companies like Kuehne + Nagel and Panalpina in Europe. Today we can proudly say that those partnerships have reached beyond European borders and extend into the Middle East, where Wallenborn opened its first office in 2013.

Kuehne + Nagel and Panalpina were both looking for a professional and dedicated supplier that could meet their trucking needs in the Middle East. Together with Wallenborn, they have been able to not only improve their supply chain, but solve some critical operational issues.

Imports and exports are both part of Wallenborn’s scope of work. Primarily pick-ups are made at the main airports in Dubai, DXB and DWC, and goods are delivered to the customers’ hub in DWC or to the final consignee in the greater Dubai area.

Exports are usually transported from the various manufacturers to the airport where the customer will forward the cargo by air. Main export locations include Sharjah Airport, DBX and DWC.

Together with Kuehne + Nagel, Wallenborn also takes care of local distribution with smaller trucks or vans. This includes mall deliveries or express service, for example.
