Ties that bind: Frantz Wallenborn

Ties that bind:
Frantz Wallenborn

As the third-generation owner of Wallenborn Group, Frantz Wallenborn is holding fast to the legacy built by his grandfather. But he does not expect his children to do the same.

Luxembourg, 01.08.2019

Like many who join a family business, Frantz’s career grew more out of chance than passion. “My father was running a small trucking company and I was tailing him. At some point, it felt like the right thing to do to join the business,” he explains. Although he was the boss’s son, Frantz paid his dues. “I started out as a dispatcher before moving on to bookkeeping and managing invoices. The company was still a small enterprise then, so there was little outsourcing and everything was done in-house,” he recalls. Frantz dabbled in various departments and was able to gain a complete understanding of the firm’s full operations. His first role, however, remains his favourite. “Dispatching was really my baby,” he professes. “Europe then was so unlike the Europe of today – there were borders. It was very exciting, being just 25 years old or so, to get to travel to all these different countries, interacting with and proposing new ideas to customers.”

Frantz took on the role of CEO in 1998 after his parents moved to the south of Spain for their retirement. Even though he hadn’t started out with a particular passion for the industry, Frantz nevertheless found himself keen to succeed. “I think it has something to do with my personality,” he guesses.

ACN Interview: Regulatory headache for European road feeder operators

ACN Interview: Regulatory headache for European road feeder operators

26.06.2017

An interview with Jason Breakwell, our Commercial Director. One of this week’s Air Cargo News top stories “Regulatory headache for European road feeder operators”

Luxembourg, 26.06.2017

European Commission regulations on drivers’ pay and rest breaks are causing significant cost and network capacity problems for air cargo’s road feeder services (RFS) sector, say two major truck operators.

The regulations mean that drivers resting overnight in certain European Union (EU) countries have to stay in a hotel rather than sleep in their cab, the industry norm for decades. The other regulation requires drivers to be paid the minimum wage for each country where they pick up or drop off a load, although transit road haulage is not affected.

Luxembourg-headquartered Wallenborn and Jan de Rijk of the Netherlands do not oppose the principle of minimum wages and hotel accommodation, but the RFS providers say that the rules should be applied equally throughout the EU, not country by country, and that the wage regulations add complexity and burden at a time when Europe faces a driver shortage.

Wallenborn opens in Liège

Wallenborn opens in Liège

Wallenborn grows together with its clients.

Luxembourg, 27.03.2017

Our values define who we are and form the foundation of our culture. They are shared by everyone across all levels of the organization. They guide our actions and behaviour, and influence the way we work with each other and the way we serve our customers. The first of our five core values is Customer focus, which means that our goals are aligned with our clients’ goals. It is for this reason that Wallenborn has just opened an office in Liège.

Frantz Wallenborn says: “As we develop our relationships with clients, we notice a growing need to have a presence in Liège itself. So much traffic flows through Belgium and it was important to our clients that we have the capability to offer greater support on site. In the short time we have been in Liège, we have already seen a further increase in demand for our services there.”

Wallenborn welcomes Donald Schaap who has joined to start up the Liège office. Donald brings with him 14 years of experience in air cargo logistics, coupled with a passion for new challenges, providing excellent customer care, and growing the business. A Belgian national, at the age of 16 he was first exposed to air cargo RFS planning at Brucargo Express NV. Although he chose to then study informatics and accounting, Donald remained fascinated by logistics. So, in 2003 he started at H.Essers as a dispatcher, and quickly progressed up the ranks to team leader planning, operations manager, project & business development. He also spent several years at J.Van Roosbroeck, a regional transport company.

Donald says: “Most members of my family worked in the air cargo business, so in some way I guess my fate was pre-determined. Still, after all these years I am loving the industry and am especially excited about this newly accepted challenge.”

If you are in the area and/or would like to learn more about how we can support you in Liège, please contact Donald via the information below, or simply pop into the office to say hello.
