dnata joins forces with leading air-cargo road feeder services provider Wallenborn

21.10.2019

dnata has strengthened its position in the cargo logistics industry in the Middle East by joining forces with Wallenborn Transports, Europe’s largest air-cargo road feeder services (RFS) operator.

Dubai, 28.10.2019

Wallenborn Transports has completed the acquisition of Agility Global Logistics’ interest in dnata PWC Airport Logistics LLC (DPAL), a Dubai-based premium road feeder services provider, and will now embark on a partnership with dnata through its ownership in DPAL. The partnership will see the companies develop new products and services, and enter new markets.

The parties have agreed not to disclose the details of the transaction. The current leadership teams will continue to manage the business and operations.

Bernd Leo Struck, Senior Vice President UAE Cargo & DWC Airline Services, dnata, and Chairman of dnata PWC Airport Logistics, said: “As one of the world’s leading cargo services providers, dnata offers a comprehensive product portfolio, including a broad range of logistics and freight forwarding services, to fully meet the diverse needs of customers.

“We are driven to provide superior services to the regional market. Joining forces with Wallenborn, a leading air-cargo road feeder services operator, helps us enhance our position in this segment and exploit business opportunities both in the UAE and internationally.

“We thank our previous joint venture partner, Agility, for a long-standing and successful partnership with dnata.”

Frantz Wallenborn, President & CEO of Wallenborn Transports, said: “I am thrilled to announce this exciting partnership with dnata which will be a game changer for airlines, forwarders and their customers. This new venture supports my long term vision to enhance RFS in the G.C.C. region and make supply chains more effective and efficient. We will extend the range and quality of RFS services from, to and within the UAE and invest in digitalisation and environmental initiatives that will create dynamic and sustainable opportunities for our customers.”

DPAL is a premium road feeder services provider in the UAE. It offers customers a wide choice of off-line routings and quality service at competitive rates. Its fleet of state-of-the-art trailers can accommodate multiple full-size freighter pallets at a time. Each vehicle is designed to interface with the loading docks of air cargo terminals to eliminate the need for forklifts during loading and unloading. As well as its physical operations, the company provides class-leading solutions for managing the increasingly complex world of airline operating systems.

Wallenborn Transports SA is a leading provider of transportation services and Europe’s largest air-cargo RFS operator. Wallenborn is the leader in major markets including Benelux, France, Germany, Italy and Scandinavia. Wallenborn has 15 offices in ten countries across Europe, as well operational bases in Dubai and Sharjah. Its pan-European road feeder services have been complemented in recent years by a range of special products including GDP certified transport for healthcare products, and TAPA TSR certified secure transport and outsized solutions for aerospace and similar precision industries.

Wallenborn drives down emissions in U.A.E.

Wallenborn drives down emissions in U.A.E.

14.10.2019

Wallenborn’s trucks and trailers in Dubai have the lowest emission standard currently in place in the U.A.E.

Dubai, 14.10.2019

Wallenborn Transports launched in the U.A.E. back in February 2013 with its first office in Dubai. Its aim was to develop a range of land transport services in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region.

This expansion was followed by Wallenborn’s observation that airlines and frequencies were growing in the Gulf states and spotting a trend toward higher frequencies of smaller aircrafts within the GCC.

A mere eight months later it opened a second local office, this time in Sharjah.

The launch in Sharjah was in response to fast growing demand for Wallenborn’s air cargo trucking services from airlines, forwarders and integrators across the U.A.E.

Wallenborn Scandinavia A/S partakes in a special trip with the “Hjerterytterne” or “Heart Riders”.

Denmark, 10.09.2019

Every year the Danish Heart Association’s cycling team cycles to raise funds for the Heart Association and the Children’s Heart Foundation in Denmark. Each rider finds donors to sponsor their season which culminates in a week-long trip somewhere outside the country. This year the final week was chosen to be in Todi, Italy. The team needed a trucking company to transport all the bicycles from Denmark to Italy and back again, and we were thrilled they selected Wallenborn Scandinavia A/S to do so. A full side opener, rollerbed trailer was used for the transport, and our excellent driver team was there to support the team every step of the way. Of course, Wally went along for the ride too!

Congratulations to all the cyclist for their efforts and driving positive change for so many people!

  • About Heart Association

The Heart Riders are the Heart Association’s cycling team. The team was established in early 2016 by a small committed group of exercise cyclists in Copenhagen who expressed a strong desire to combine exercise and community with a wholehearted effort for the Heart Association and the Children’s Heart Foundation. In 2019, there are over 300 Heart Riders across Denmark. In general, riders cycle around 2,500 km per season (March to September).

Wallenborn tests a fully electric terminal tractor

Wallenborn tests a fully electric terminal tractor

20.08.2019

Can a fully electric terminal tractor perform as well as the current diesel tractors?

Luxembourg, 20.08.2019

Over the years Wallenborn has made continuous efforts to reduce its environmental impact. As a trucking company, this is particularly important. As part of this continued initiative, we are currently testing a fully electric terminal tractor at Luxembourg’s Findel airport.

Terminal tractors are used for moving trailers within a cargo yard, warehouse facility, or intermodal facility. The advantage of using terminal tractors versus trucks to move the trailers from the docking stations to the parkings lies in the fact that it is easier and faster to connect the trailer. The automatic fifth wheel means articulated lorries can be hitched and lifted without drivers having to leave their seats. In addition, using pre-loaders optimises productivity in that the drivers can take their legal breaks during loading/unloading times.

At Wallenborn, terminal tractors are used exclusively by our pre-loaders, and operate 24/7/365. Approximately 100 trailers are loaded or unloaded every day in Luxembourg.

Advantages of a fully electric terminal tractor include very low noise levels compared with industrial and utility vehicles, and of course, they are more environmentally friendly. Traction capacity is the same as diesel powered ones, up to 44 tonnes.

Wallenborn currently operates 2 diesel run terminal tractors at Findel. Over the next few months several models of fully electric terminal tractors will be tested as potential replacements for the diesel powered vehicles. Luxair has been supporting the effort through the provision of charging facilities.

Airline Cargo Management speaks to Jason Breakwell about the cool chain sector.

Frankfurt 27.02.2025

“In September, the Cool Chain Association (CCA) is meeting in the French capital, Paris, to discuss and share thoughts on collaborative solutions for innovation and data sharing at its 7th Pharma and Biosciences Conference. Indeed, innovators with new solutions are exploring how they can work together to provide the infrastructure needed to ensure a successful end-to-end cool chain delivery.”

“As much as air cargo must adhere to the needs of the growing pharma and cold chain sectors, so must the ground-based feeder trucking networks.”

“Like others in the community, Breakwell acknowledges that regulatory requirements have become stricter in many countries, most notably in the European Union with the EU Good Distribution Practice.”

Temperature controlled transportations on the rise in Scandinavia

Temperature controlled transportations on the rise in Scandinavia

06.08.2019

Wallenborn Scandinavia expands its fleet with 10 new temperature controlled trailers.

Luxembourg, 06.08.2019

Scandinavia has long been an important market for Wallenborn. Copenhagen Airport’s attractive geography and location have helped make it a northern European hub for air cargo traffic to Scandinavia, the Baltic States and the countries to the south of the Baltic Sea. Wallenborn, which has had a presence in the region since its acquisition of Haugsted AirCargo Services in 2009, has been able to leverage this to service a number of different industries. This includes transports for the Health Care, Automotive, Farming and Engineering & Manufacturing sectors.

In the past three years alone, Wallenborn expanded its footprint in Scandinavia by more than 20%. New trucking lanes have been added continuously, including connections from Finland and Sweden to St. Petersburg, additional frequencies to the Baltic states and extra capacity connecting the Nordic region with major air hubs such as AMS, FRA, LGG and LUX. Wallenborn currently offers more than 90 daily lanes distributing import transit cargo from the incoming widebody- and freighter flights flying into CPH, OSL, GOT, OSL and HEL amongst others.

More recently, the need for temperature controlled transport has been on the rise. Peter Nygaard, branch Manager of Wallenborn Scandinavia said: “We have seen a steady rise in airfreight volumes over the past 5 years, but the demand for temperature controlled transportation has increased significantly over the past year. To respond to this growing demand we have invested in additional temperature controlled trailers which are kitted out with the latest technology.”

Moreover, the company offers a network of more than 130 scheduled daily RFS lanes connecting not only the airports within the Baltic and Nordic countries, but also from and to all of Europe’s major airports. Ties that bind: Frantz Wallenborn

Ties that bind:
Frantz Wallenborn

As the third-generation owner of Wallenborn Group, Frantz Wallenborn is holding fast to the legacy built by his grandfather. But he does not expect his children to do the same.

Luxembourg, 01.08.2019

Like many who join a family business, Frantz’s career grew more out of chance than passion. “My father was running a small trucking company and I was tailing him. At some point, it felt like the right thing to do to join the business,” he explains. Although he was the boss’s son, Frantz paid his dues. “I started out as a dispatcher before moving on to bookkeeping and managing invoices. The company was still a small enterprise then, so there was little outsourcing and everything was done in-house,” he recalls. Frantz dabbled in various departments and was able to gain a complete understanding of the firm’s full operations. His first role, however, remains his favourite. “Dispatching was really my baby,” he professes. “Europe then was so unlike the Europe of today – there were borders. It was very exciting, being just 25 years old or so, to get to travel to all these different countries, interacting with and proposing new ideas to customers.”

Frantz took on the role of CEO in 1998 after his parents moved to the south of Spain for their retirement. Even though he hadn’t started out with a particular passion for the industry, Frantz nevertheless found himself keen to succeed. “I think it has something to do with my personality,” he guesses.

Wallenborn Belgium becomes a Regulated Agent

Wallenborn Belgium becomes a Regulated Agent

30.07.2019

Our Belgian branch, Wallenborn Belgium SPRL, passed the audit to become a Regulated Agent.

Luxembourg, 30.07.2019

Around 80% of air cargo is carried on passenger aircraft, so it is important that all air cargo is robustly screened to ensure that prohibited articles are not part of flown cargo. To be able to handle secure cargo, companies need to become a Regulated Agent, as approved and required by the aviation authority.

Pre-requisites of becoming a Regulated Agent include:

  • you handle cargo which will be carried on civil aircraft
  • you or another person acting on your behalf deliver cargo direct to an aircraft operator

In addition, companies must be able to demonstrate that:

  • all staff (permanent, temporary/agency staff and drivers) with access to air cargo/mail have received the appropriate aviation security training
  • access to the production area is controlled and the production process is supervised

Once a company has successfully completed the audit and approved as a Regulated Agent, listing can be for up to a maximum of five years before. Therafter companies need to be re-audited.

With its new status, Wallenborn Belgium now joins Wallenborn Netherlands BV, Wallenborn UK Limited, Wallenborn Scandinavia A/S, and of course Wallenborn Transports S.A. in Luxembourg as a Regulated Agent. A big congratulations to Donald Schaap, Branch Manager Belgium, and his team for the successful audit completion.

Heathrow truckers benefit from reduced waiting times

Heathrow truckers benefit from reduced waiting times

23.07.2019

Wallenborn’s Commercial Director, Jason Breakwell speaks to Air Cargo News about the benefits of Advance Information System (AIS) at Heathrow.

Luxembourg, 23.07.2019

“Trucking firms have noticed a reduction in dwell times at Heathrow airport’s congested cargo sheds following the launch of a community data system. Air cargo data community CCS-UK launched its Advance Information System (AIS) more than 18 months ago and various logistics players are now using the system, which provides shipment updates and data through a centralised platform.”

“Road feeder service provider Wallenborn manager, development and key accounts, Jason Breakwell said that the company began using the AIS portal just over a year ago and had since used it to replace all of its manual systems. That means all our teams over Europe; London, Amsterdam, Brussels, Liege, are using AIS and no longer reporting by email.”

“It was a smooth transition. Our team likes AIS – they thought it was easy to use and it was simple to upload data.”

Breakwell said that the company will also soon use APIs to link into the system, which should smooth the entry of data.”
